Begin with the teapot you wish to cover.
Measure the width your teapot from tip of the spout, to farthest end of
the
handle. Add 3 inches to determine length "W"
Measure the height your teapot from table surface to tip of the lid knob
and
add 4 inches. Length "H"
All the measurements following are based on these two numbers.
An average six cup teapot is 11"x 7"
These two measurements will determine your front and back panel sizes.
You
are going to cut a halfmoon shape with the first measurement (W) as the
bottom line, and the second measurement (H) as the height at the center of
the halfmoon; straight up from the center of the bottom line. Draw this on
a piece of paper first so that you have a pattern to work with.
This drawing is not to scale, just to give you an idea of what to do.

The "halfmoon" shape that you want to achieve is not a true half
circle. It
is more of a half oval. Think of the Gateway Arch in St.Louis as your
guide.
This is art, not science, so relax, your tea cozy will be unique.
Cutting:
- two strips ACROSS the width of the background fabric 5" wide x W
- two strips WITH the grain of the background fabric 3"xH
- cut one of the half oval shape that you made above, from the base
fabric, and two from the lining fabric, and two from the batting.
for the Star:
- one 2.5"x2.5" square of dark small print
- four 1 7/8" squares of dark small print
- four 1 7/8" squares of light small print
- four 1.5" squares of light small print
- four 2 7/8" squares of dark medium print
- four 2 7/8" squares of light medium print
- four 2.5" squares of light medium print
These instructions are using the "Half triangles from squares" quick
piecing
technique.
Place the four sets of 1 7/8 dark and light squares right sides
together. Mark diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner. Stitch
1/4
inch on either side of that line, then cut apart at that line. You will
end
up with two half triangle squares from each set of originial squares.
Stitch all the small print squares together in a traditional Star,
by first making the 'V' shapes with all of the half triangle squares you
just constructed; then stitching one 'V' to either side of the 2.5" dark;
then stitching one 1.5" light to either side of each of the last two 'V'
shapes. Stitch those three strips together to form the inside star.
Repeat the same process for the outer star, but leaving the bottom as a
plain piece; then stitch strips of the background fabric to the
sides and top of the Star. Cut a ‘half moon’ from this piece.

Sew the front and back together along the curve. Stack the lining and
batting together and sew together along curve, leaving opening for
turning. Tuck the outside into the inside and sew along the bottom, then
turn through the hole you left in the lining. Close the hole.
Make the self covered buttons as in the instructions that came with the
hardware. Stitch one on either side of the top middle of the tea cozy,
pulling them taunt together. Hang the tassel on one of the buttons.
